Q&A: Ask the Building Expert

Question: We love decorating our home for Christmas and usually plug all our lights, tree, and inflatable displays into one power strip. It’s convenient, but is that really safe?

Answer:  No, it’s not. Power strips are designed for temporary, low-load use — not for running multiple high-wattage holiday decorations at once. Plugging too many items into one strip can overload the circuit, creating a serious fire hazard. Instead, spread your decorations across multiple outlets on different circuits and use extension cords rated for outdoor or indoor use as appropriate. Always check for the UL label and never daisy-chain multiple strips together. Keeping your setup simple and properly rated helps ensure a bright, safe, and worry-free holiday season.
